Why Are My Drains Gurgling? What the Noise Means

2 April 2025 5 min read

A gurgling sink or toilet is your drainage system trying to tell you something. Here is what the noise really means and how to act before it becomes a blockage.

That distinctive gurgling or bubbling sound from a plughole or toilet is easy to ignore, but it is one of the earliest warning signs that something is wrong with your drainage. The noise is caused by trapped air being forced back through the water in your pipes, and it almost always means water and air are not flowing freely through the system. Catching it early can save you from a full blockage. Here is what the different signs mean.

The most common cause is a partial blockage. As grease, hair, or debris build up inside a pipe, they narrow the channel that water and air move through. When water drains past the restriction, it disturbs pockets of trapped air, which bubble back up and create the gurgling sound. At this stage the drain may still work, just more slowly, so it is the ideal time to act before it blocks completely.

A blocked or restricted vent pipe is another frequent culprit. Your drainage system has a vent, often a soil pipe running up the side or through the roof of the house, which lets air in to balance the pressure as water flows away. If this vent becomes blocked by leaves, moss, or a bird's nest, the draining water pulls a vacuum instead, which sucks air through the water traps and causes gurgling across several fixtures.

Pay attention to which fixture gurgles and when. If your sink gurgles when you flush the toilet, or the bath bubbles when the washing machine drains, it points to a shared blockage further down the main line rather than a problem with one individual fixture. The more fixtures affected, the deeper in the system the problem usually lies.

For a single slow, gurgling drain, you can try the same home fixes that work for smells and minor blockages: a hot water flush, a baking soda and vinegar treatment, or gentle plunging to shift the build-up before it hardens. Clearing the restriction early often stops the noise for good.

However, if gurgling is accompanied by slow drainage across several fixtures, bad smells, or water backing up, or if it keeps returning after cleaning, the cause is likely a significant blockage, a vent problem, or a structural fault such as root ingress or a collapsed section. These need professional diagnosis. A CCTV drain survey shows exactly what is happening inside the pipe, and our engineers cover properties throughout Hampshire.
