How to Prevent Blocked Drains: A Seasonal Checklist

9 June 2025 6 min read

The cheapest drain repair is the one you never need. Follow this simple room-by-room and season-by-season checklist to keep your drains clear all year round.

The most expensive drainage problems are almost always the ones that could have been prevented. A few simple habits and a little seasonal maintenance will keep your drains flowing freely and save you the stress and cost of an emergency callout. Here is a practical checklist you can follow throughout the year.

In the kitchen, protect against grease. Fats, oils, and grease are the single biggest cause of kitchen blockages, so never pour them down the sink. Let them cool and solidify, then scrape them into the bin. Wipe greasy pans with kitchen roll before washing, fit a sink strainer to catch food scraps, and run the hot tap for a few seconds after washing up to help flush residue through.

In the bathroom, control hair and scum. Hair binding with soap is the leading cause of bath and shower blockages. Fit an inexpensive hair catcher over every plughole and empty it regularly. Only ever flush the three Ps down the toilet, that is pee, poo, and paper, and keep a bin in the bathroom for wet wipes, cotton pads, and sanitary products, none of which break down in the system.

Once a month, give your drains a maintenance flush. Pour a kettle of hot water down each drain, or use the baking soda and white vinegar method followed by a hot water rinse, to break down the early stages of grease and soap build-up before they harden into a blockage. This simple ten-minute routine prevents the vast majority of slow-draining problems.

In autumn, focus on the outside. Falling leaves are the main cause of blocked gullies and surface water drains, a particular issue across Hampshire's leafy streets. Clear leaves and moss from drain grates and gully covers regularly, clean out your guttering, and make sure rainwater downpipes are running freely before the winter rains arrive.

In winter, guard against freezing. Outside pipes and condensate drains from boilers can freeze in cold snaps, causing backups. Insulate exposed outside pipework where you can, and if a boiler condensate pipe freezes, a gentle pour of warm water along its length will usually thaw it.

Finally, book a professional check when it is due. Even with good habits, a periodic high-pressure jetting service and, for older properties, an occasional CCTV survey will clear hidden build-up and catch structural problems like root ingress or cracked pipes long before they become a costly emergency. Homeowners and businesses across Hampshire use planned maintenance to keep their drains trouble-free, and our team is happy to advise on a sensible schedule for your property.
